Want to become the Epic VA with all the best clients, juicy word-of-mouth referrals, and the month-long waitlist? The secret to finding the right clients starts with you!
A great mentor can literally take years off of your career pursuit. And when you’re building a virtual assistant business as a side hustle, that definitely adds up in time AND money!
Having a great mentor did that for my virtual assistant business. In fact, I very well could have closed the doors of my multiple six-figure business if it hadn’t been for finding the right mentors at the right time. (DM me if you want the whole story.)
A little different to a coach, a mentor is a person who is currently doing, or has done, something that you want to or are trying to do currently. A mentor will help you find your individual path to success and fulfillment.
As your Virtual Assistant business grows, your perspective or goals may change. Instead of focusing on key concepts, a mentor focuses on you as an individual to help you create your own vision and the path to get there. They’ll ask lots of questions to help you get there and coach you during your journey so you can easily pivot and tweak your performance more easily in the moment.
We dove into the differences between a teacher, coach, and mentor in an earlier blog post, but for now let’s ask the big questions about mentorship.
Finding a great mentor is one of the most powerful things you can do to build momentum for your Virtual Assistant business.
Here are 4 signs that your Virtual Assistant mentor is the right one for you:
Your Virtual Assistant mentor shares their expertise with you.
This may seem obvious, but a strong mentoring relationship doesn’t work if your mentor doesn’t share their methods and success secrets with you.
If you find that a mentor isn’t willing to share their full knowledge, expertise, and experience with you, find another. There are MANY highly skilled and qualified mentors who will gladly share their resources.
You respect and trust your Virtual Assistant business mentor.
When you respect someone and how they got to where you want to be, you’ll trust their lead and listen to them. Select possible mentors who have achieved what you want to achieve.
Is your potential mentor someone you could get along with? In a strong mentoring relationship, you’re going to take feedback and possible corrections from this person. If your personalities don’t mesh well, the delivery of a well-intentioned constructive criticism could become a hurdle.
Your Virtual Assistant mentor respects you.
A great mentor understands where you are because they were once there, too. Because of this, they treat you with compassion and respect. They understand that you’re learning as you go along and won’t judge you if you make a mistake.
Are you motivated by a drill sergeant, Mr. Miyagi, or Professor McGonagall? While differences in style is understandable, condescension or impatience from your mentor is not the same as respectful accountability.
Your Virtual Assistant business mentor believes in you.
A great mentor is discerning with their time and expertise. They may not even offer mentorships publicly. Even if they do, there may be an application process before they accept a mentee.
However your potential mentor finds mentees, don’t be afraid to share your big hopes and dreams and fears with them. A great mentor will believe in what you’re capable of and push you to achieve it, even if you don’t quite believe in it yet.
